Circle Mirror Transformation
by Annie Baker
Pretend to be a baseball glove. Have an entire conversation using only the word “goulash." These are some of the exercises in Marty’s creative drama class. When her four new students experiment with these harmless theatre games, hearts are quietly torn apart and tiny wars of epic proportions are waged and won. Acclaimed as the debut of the year by one of the most exciting new writers in the country, Circle Mirror Transformation is the hilarious, moving new comedy about five citizens of a rural town who begin a community acting class only to discover more about themselves than they ever expected. The New York Times called this comedy triumph “absorbing and sharply funny" in a debut that was extended twice by popular demand. |

- MARTY, Female, 55, is the co-executive director at the Community Center in Shirley, Vermont. Teaches pottery, jewelry-making, and Creative Drama for youth at the center. Has long been pushing for the adult Creative Drama class, which she is now teaching. Marty, which is short for Martha, is originally from New Jersey. She is married, but has no children. She is close to her stepdaughter. Is very interested in non-traditional healing and hopes to move to the Southwest some day.
JAMES, 60, teaches at the local college. With his father in the army, he grew up in many places, but eventually went to high school and college in California. His father was an alcoholic and abusive to his mother. James is married to Marty, who is teaching the Creative Drama class. Has a daughter from an earlier marriage and is not as close to his daughter as he would like to be.
SCHULTZ, 48, is a carpenter, who is recently divorced. He thinks of himself as an artist and in addition to regular carpentry, he makes special chairs. He likes to garden and is rather lonely and vulnerable after the divorce, which was very painful for him.
THERESA, 35, is an actress, who has recently left New York City to live in Shirley, Vermont. She grew up in a small town in New Hampshire. One of the reasons she moved to Vermont was to be closer to her parents. Her father has prostate cancer. She found New York very competitive and claustrophobic and six months prior to leaving the city she broke up with her boyfriend. She considered the relationship a toxic relationship, but still worries about whether she did the right thing. LAUREN, 16, is a high school student who loves theater and hopes that the class will teach her how to act. She is dreaming of playing Maria in West Side Story at an upcoming production at her school. But she is also interested in going to veterinary school. Her mother is Lebanese and her father is Irish. Please note: while the character is 16, we will read actresses of other ages who look appropriate.
